OUTSIDE MY WINDOW::
Chilly, grey, delicious

WHAT I'M LISTENING TO::
Herbie Hancock, Frank Sinatra, etc.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO/DREAMING OF ::
Been thinking a lot about dreaming.  And some of my big dreams.  And where they fit.
THANKFUL FOR ::
Schedules & Checklists!!  They save my life and my sanity.

PONDERING ::
The difficult work of addiction recovery.  We lost someone struggling with substance abuse disorder this past week, and my heart is hurting for the ones closest to her.  And the risk of loving.  And the challenge of this kind of work.

REMEMBERING ::
Memories of my family in Kansas.  They sit - always - in a precious, painful place in my heart.

READING ::

TO LIVE THE LIFE ::

Quiet, quiet, quiet.  I told my counselor yesterday that this is one of the primary ways I am learning I must deal with the things God is digging up in me.

TOWARDS RAISING HUNGRY LEARNERS ::

We cannot leave sex ed to chance.  It is hard and awkward and actually a little scary to talk to our kids about the facts of life.  Sometimes when I talk to them, I think..."What if I'm telling them this too soon and it makes them curious and they get into trouble?"  But then I remember that we decided a long time ago to be the FIRST ones to tell our kids about this stuff.  And I reminded my boys last night how blessed they are to get to learn from their parents, instead of hearing it in a dirty way from friends.

So...last night I'm reading this book to my 2 youngest boys.  And the 13-year old hollers through the door from the hall..."I'm sorry, guys!"  He was feeling embarrassed for them.  But then before I know it, all 4 boys are on the bed laughing and looking and learning and acting like they hated it.  But really, it is a relief to know the truth about things and not have to guess.  And the only way for them to be prepared for what this culture is going to throw at them (EVEN IN CHRISTIAN SCHOOL!!!) is to be educated.

One of the funniest things that happened last night came from the 4-yr-old....as we ended our reading for the night and were flipping through the pages, he shot his hand out and stopped me on a page that illustrated the journey of sperm.  He's like....wait!  And then lets out a blood-curdling scream.  We fell out laughing.  There was nothing inappropriate about it, and he didn't have a clue what he was seeing yet.  But it was super funny.

You may thing your kids are too young.  But trust me - this culture and their friends don't share your opinion on that.  Be the first.   Get to them before someone else does.

A FEW PLANS FOR THIS WEEK::

Well....the schedules and lists I mentioned above are epic this week.  But making a list and assigning each task to a day and even a time makes it much more manageable.  For instance, I just found out David and I are doing the funeral of an internet church attendee who lives 4 hours away.  So friday includes 8 hours of driving, a funeral, and then my boys have a game that night.  It could have been a panic moment.  But instead, I went to my weekly list and reassigned all of the Friday tasks to Tuesday and Wednesday and then started working through the most crucial parts of the list.
